Edition #2, 22 October 2007 Hello, my name is Cynthia. Thank you for visiting my second in a series of articles on coastal New England. I am a New England mermaid, born off the coast of New London, Connecticut. This website is a way for residents and fans of coastal New England to learn more about the area. A new edition will be posted every two weeks. If you missed my first article, you can find it here. Misquamicut, Rhode IslandMisquamicut State Beach, in southwestern Rhode island, is an excellent place to cool off and have fun. Located on Route 1A south of Westerly, the beach spans seven miles of coastline. Plenty of parking is available. Here is a map of the area. Misquamicut is, of course, a native American name. It means, "Red salmon at this place." I think I'm getting hungry. If you have young children, be sure to watch them on the beach. There is some surf here, and it can knock you down if you're not paying attention. This is the Atlantic Ocean after all. Swimming isn't the only thing to do in Misquamicut. The young and the young at heart will enjoy the Merry-go-round, the arcade, water slides, and miniature golf. Everyone will enjoy the variety of restaurants in the area. Visit Sam's Snack bar for some clam strips or stop by Little Mermaids for breakfast or lunch. Hey, that is a great name! The Seafood Haven is known for its award winning chowder and fritters, and the New Breachway Market for its grinders (submarine sandwiches). I'm making myself hungry again. There is plenty to do after dark as well. Dance to area Rock & Roll bands and DJ's. Try Karaoke, I'll be listening. If visiting from out of town, a choice of accommodations is available. Whether you want a room directly on the beach or a luxury hotel, Misquamicut has it. Misquamicut's motto is Surf, Sun, and Sand. What more could you want? Visit www.misquamicut.org for more information, and do take a look at the short video clip there. Another resource is www.riparks.com/misquamicut.htm, by the State of Rhode Island, Department of Environmental Management. Remember, if you see me in the water, be sure to wave.
