Newport, Vermont

The city of Newport is located in the far northeastern Vermont. Not far from the Canadian border, Newport lies at the southern shore of Lake Memphrémagog. Newport was chartered in 1802, and organized as a city in 1917 from portions of the towns of Newport and Derby. Here is a map of Newport.

Lake Memphrémagog, whose name means "Where there is a big expanse of water", has been the topic of much discussion and study. Several people have reported sighting a sea creature in its depths. No, it wasn't me! The creature has been described as black in color, and about 20 feet long. While not as famous around the world as Nessie of Loch Ness, the story of Memphre is well known by the locals.

Newport is the home of a production facility for the Vermont Teddy Bear company. Their main factory resides in Shelburne, Vermont. Each bear is hand made in Vermont and is guaranteed for life. You can personalize your bear in a number of ways; your gift will be unique. Note that these are not small bears. Each Vermont Teddy Bear is at least 15 inches (38 cm) tall. Lake Memphramagog, VT

The Newport State Airport is located three miles southwest of Newport at 2628 Airport Road - Coventry. The Jay Peak Ski and Summer Resort is under 20 miles west of downtown Newport. Shuttle service is available to and from the airport for $40 round trip, but 24 hours notice is required.

For breakfast or lunch, visit the Brown Cow Restaurant at 900 East Main Street. You may also wish to visit Little G's Deli and Pasta at 33 Railroad Square, Parkside Family Restaurant on Clyde Street, and Lago Trattoria Italian restaurant at 95 Main Street.

In the summer, make your way to Lindsay Beach. The beach is located northeast of downtown Newport in the town of Derby. Golfers will find the Newport Country Club to their liking. This par 72 course is expertly maintained, and is found about a mile west of Interstate 91, southeast of downtown Newport.

The Water's Edge Bed & Breakfast is located on the shores of Lake Memphrémagog at 324 Wishing Well Avenue in Newport. Enjoy a great night's sleep and wake up to a full Vermont style breakfast. The Water's Edge also features on-site fishing, Internet access, satellite television, and fireplaces.

In the fall, travel throughout Vermont and New Hampshire offers spectacular views of the changing leaves. Send me your favorite fall foliage photograph and I will feature it in an upcoming article.
